WWE SuperSmackdown LIVE Invades Grand Rapids, Michigan

Erick Rowan Splash

Introduction

This week, I was in attendance for both WWE Main Event and Smackdown, which took place at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Before both events got underway, there was a bonus match between current rivals Sin Cara and Curtis Axel. These two rivals have had a series of matches against one another as of late and Sin Cara has come out victorious every single time, including this one.

Main Event

The first event of the night was Main Event. There was one backstage segment that I found pretty hilarious. Paige seemed to be impressed with how good Erick Rowan seems to be at playing chess; it was recently learned that Rowan has a pretty high IQ. Titus O’Neil then approached Rowan and did not seem impressed. Rowan then challenged Titus to play him in a game; after Titus made a move he said “King Me!” Apparently, Titus was not aware of the fact that that rule only applies to checkers and not chess. After Titus knocked over the chess pieces and walked off in a fit of rage, Rowan then picked up a piece and said “Checkmate!” Later on in the main event between Rowan …

Main Event and Smackdown Return to Van Andel Arena

Van Andel Arena

Last week Tuesday, my dad and I were in attendance for the WWE Main Event (which airs Wednesdays at 8/7 PM CT on Ion Television) and Smackdown (which airs Fridays at 8/7 PM CT on Syfy) tapings at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I am posting this now because I do not believe in putting spoilers in my posts. We were seated not very far away from ringside, so we had a pretty close view of the event.

Main Event

During the Main Event taping, a match between Naomi (accompanied by Cameron Lynn) and NXT standout Emma took place that didn’t end up being televised, with Naomi coming out the victor. Also, at the very beginning of a divas tag team match between The Bella Twins (Nikki & Brie) and the team of Alicia Fox & Aksana, something awesome happened. I started a “Total Divas” chant for The Bellas and Nikki heard me because she pointed right at me. The Bellas were victorious in that match.

Smackdown

As for Smackdown, at one point during the show, Emma was in the audience during two matches, at least. This was the second week in a row that …

WWE Main Event 7-3-13: Only One Hero Conquers

Christian

Money In the Bank Momentum

In a match that had huge implications for the upcoming WWE event, Money In the Bank, it was Christian (one of the competitors in the WWE Championship Contract Money In the Bank Ladder Match) who went one-on-one with one-half of Team Rhodes Scholars Damien Sandow (one of the competitors in the World Heavyweight Championship Contract Money In the Bank Ladder Match). After back-and-forth action between the two competitors, it was Christian who hit Sandow with his signature maneuver “The Killswitch” to get the pin and the win.

Victory For America(?)

Prior to the match between Sin Cara and Jack Swagger (accompanied by Zeb Colter), Colter not only expressed his discontent for illegal immigrants in America, but also the way in which Americans celebrate Independence Day. Colter’s rant did not sit very well with Sin Cara and was looking to prove a point against Swagger. Unfortunately, it was not to be, as Swagger forced Sin Cara to submit to his signature submission hold “The Patriot Act” to get the victory.

Big E Langston Dominates

In the main event, Curt Hawkins went one-on-one with Big E Langston (accompanied by WWE Divas Champion AJ Lee). While I am …

WWE Main Event 6-26-13: The Shield’s New Competition

The Shield Are Put On Notice

Christian went one-on-one with United States Champion and Shield leader Dean Ambrose in a non-title match. Christian was out for retribution after being attacked by The Shield (Dean Ambrose & WWE Tag Team Champions Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns) on Smackdown from the previous Friday. In the end, Christian got the win via disqualification after the other two Shield members came out and attacked Christian. The Shield continued their attack on Christian, until the the #1 contenders to the WWE Tag Team Championship and Reigns’ second cousins The Usos (Jimmy & Jey) came out to even the odds. In the end, Christian and The Usos drove The Shield away from the ring. This all lead to a Six-Man Tag Team Match for that week’s upcoming Smackdown.

Tons of Funk Get A Grand Introduction, Only to Be Defeated

Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay & Tensai) got introduced in grand fashion when their corner women The Funkadactyls (Naomi & Cameron Lynn), along with WWE’s newest diva Jo-Jo Offerman, performed Tons of Funk’s & The Funkadactyls’ theme music “Somebody Call My Momma”. Personally, I thought their singing was as beautiful as they are. All three of these …

WWE Main Event 6-19-13: The Shield Continues It’s Dominance

On this edition of Main Event, Justin Gabriel and The Usos (Jimmy & Jey) took on The Shield (United States Champion Dean Ambrose & WWE Tag Team Champions Seth Rollins & The Usos’ second cousin Roman Reigns). In the end, just as Gabriel was going to hit Ambrose with his signature maneuver “The 450 Splash”, chaos ensued when the other competitors got involved and it allowed Ambrose to recover and put a halt to Gabriel’s momentum. Ambrose then hit Gabriel with his signature maneuver “The Standing Bulldog” to get the pin and the win for his team. I definitely think that The Usos should get the next championship opportunity against Rollins & Reigns because The Usos have not only taken a stand against The Shield, but they are also way overdue for a reign as WWE Tag Team Champions. Also, Zeb Colter accompanied Antonio Cesaro to the ring for his match against Sin Cara and prior to the match, Colter said that he admires Cesaro for shedding his European roots to embrace being a “real American”. As I stated before, I am convinced that when Jack Swagger, the guy that Colter currently manages who is out with an injury, makes …

WWE Main Event 6-12-13: The Usos Bring Down the Funk

The show began with The Miz going one-on-one with one-half of Team Rhodes Scholars Cody Rhodes. The regular commentary team for Main Event is Josh Mathews, The Miz, & Ricardo Rodriguez, but since The Miz was in a match, Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett provided commentary with Josh Mathews throughout the show, with Ricardo Rodriguez being absent altogether for some reason. As for the match, The Miz was victorious. Also, in the main event, it was two fan favorite tag teams going at it as The Usos (Jimmy & Jey) faced Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay & Tensai) (accompanied by The Funkadactyls (Naomi & Cameron Lynn). In the end, it was The Usos who came out on top to end the program. I am a fan of both of these teams, but I was rooting for The Usos in this one. I also think that no matter which team walks out of the upcoming WWE Pay-Per-View event, Payback, as WWE Tag Team Champions, whether it’d be the defending champions Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns of The Shield or the unlikely pairing of Randy Orton and one-half of Team Hell No Daniel Bryan, The Usos should get the next opportunity at the …

WWE Main Event 6-5-13: Bad Homecoming for Curt Hawkins

This week’s edition of Main Event took place in Long Island, New York. In the main event, it was Justin Gabriel who went one-on-one with Curt Hawkins, who hails from Queens, New York, which is not too far away from Long Island. Unfortunately for Hawkins, it turned out to be a bad homecoming when Gabriel beat him after hitting Hawkins with his signature maneuver “The 450 Splash”. Also, it was announced that Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett will defend against both The Miz and Fandango in a Triple Threat Match at the upcoming Pay-Per-View event, Payback.…

WWE Main Event 5-29-13: New Commentary Team

On this edition of Main Event, the WWE Universe was introduced to Main Event’s newest commentary team in Josh Mathews, Ricardo Rodriguez, and The Miz. One of the great things about this new commentary team is the fact that John “Bradshaw” Layfield is not included. Also, it was a back-and-forth-action non-title match between Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett and Sheamus O’Shaunessy. In the end, when both men went for their respective signature maneuvers, it was Sheamus who ended up beating Barrett to the punch (or rather the kick) to get the pin and the win. After the match, Barrett challenged The Miz to step in the ring with him. Miz accepted the invitation and left the announcers’ table to step inside the ring. After a brief face-off, Barrett attempted to hit Miz with his championship belt, but Miz ended up ducking and hitting Barrett with his signature maneuver “The Skull-Crushing Finale”.…

WWE Main Event 5-22-13: Ryback Strikes Again

The show began with a rematch between Alberto Del Rio (accompanied by Ricardo Rodriguez) and NXT Champion Big E Langston (accompanied by AJ Lee) from this past Monday on Raw. Big E defeated Del Rio last Monday thanks to a distraction from AJ and a thumb to the eye of Del Rio, but on this night, Del Rio got retribution when he beat Big E. In the main event, The Usos (Jimmy & Jey) took on 3MB members Drew McIntyre & Jinder Mahal (accompanied by 3MB leader Heath Slater). At one point during the match, an ambulance emerges into the arena with Ryback coming out of the back, similar to what he did this past Monday on Raw. After taking out Heath Slater, he then carries him over and stuffs him into the ambulance, just like he did to one-half of Team Cobro Zack Ryder this past Monday on Raw. The Usos capitalized on this and picked up the victory. Also, Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett was supposed to defend against Sin Cara, but for some reason, the match didn’t take place. I sure hope this match is post-poned and not cancelled because Sin Cara has earned this opportunity.…

WWE Raw 5-20-13: Two Superstars Get the Biggest Wins of Their Careers

The show began with Ryback actually arriving into the arena in the back of an ambulance. After Ryback stepped out of the ambulance and then on top of it, he then went on to challenge WWE Champion John Cena in an Ambulance Match for the championship at the upcoming Payback Pay-Per-View event and the match has been made official. Also, after hearing all the rumors, it was confirmed that Paul Heyman had enlisted a new client named Curtis Axel, the man formerly known as Michael McGillicutty. As Heyman discusses Axel, he is then interrupted by WWE Chief Operating Officer Triple H. Triple H then tells Heyman that he has every intention of kicking his ass. Then, Axel gets in Triple H’s face, but ends up receiving a slap for his troubles. Triple H then says that he will face Axel in a match later on in the evening and added that after he kicks Axel’s ass, he’s going to kick Heyman’s. Also, Alberto Del Rio (accompanied by his personal ring announcer Ricardo Rodriguez), the new #1 contender to Dolph Ziggler’s World Heavyweight Championship, went one-on-one with NXT Champion Big E Langston (accompanied by AJ Lee). In the end, thanks to …

WWE Main Event 5-15-13: Sin Cara Returns

The Miz was back on commentary with Michael Cole on this week’s edition of Main Event. The first match of the night was between WWE Tag Team Champion and one-half of Team Hell No Kane against Shield member Seth Rollins (accompanied by fellow Shield cohorts Dean Ambrose & Roman Reigns). In the end, Rollins was disqualified after The Shield began a 3-on-1 assault on Kane. Kane’s WWE Tag Team Championship partner and the other half of Team Hell No Daniel Bryan wasn’t at the arena this night, but fortunately, Roman Reigns’ second cousins The Usos came to Kane’s aid to fend off The Shield. Also, it was the returning Sin Cara who took on Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett in a non-title match; Sin Cara was able to pull off the upset and defeat Barrett. I think he should get an opportunity at Barrett’s championship because of this. Finally, in the main event, one-half of International Airstrike Justin Gabriel went one-on-one with one-half of Team Rhodes Scholars Cody Rhodes, who is The Miz’s opponent at the Extreme Rules Pre-Show this Sunday. The Miz got an up-close-and-personal look from the announcers’ table at Rhodes beating Gabriel. Is this what awaits Miz come …

WWE Main Event 5-8-13: 3MB Gets Rocked

The show began with the first main event of the night between Randy Orton and Antonio Cesaro. After back-and-forth-action between the two, it was Orton who struck Cesaro with his signature maneuver “The RKO” out of nowhere to get the victory. Also, in the second main event of the night, Justin Gabriel and The Usos (Jimmy & Jey) took on 3MB (Heath Slater, Drew McIntyre, & Jinder Mahal) in a Six-Man Tag Team Match. There was a lot of flying around in this match-up and in the end, it was Gabriel who hit McIntyre with his signature maneuver “The 450 Splash” to get the victory for his team. In my opinion, I think this match stole the show.…

WWE Main Event 5-1-13: Kofi Kingston Retains Championship, But Loses Some of His Hair

I was in attendance at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan for this edition of Main Event. In the first match, former United States Champion Antonio Cesaro invoked his rematch clause against the man who beat him for the championship, Kofi Kingston. It was back-and-forth action between the two, but in the end, Kofi beat Cesaro to retain his championship. After the match, Matt Striker interviewed Kofi; Kofi revealed that last week, his wife gave birth to their first son. A few minutes later, as Kofi is walking backstage, he gets jumped by Cesaro in brutal fashion. Then, Cesaro shocks everybody by actually ripping some Kofi’s hair right off his head before walking off. Finally, in the main event, Justin Gabriel goes one-on-one with his former WWE Tag Team Championship partner and leader of 3Mb Heath Slater (accompanied by fellow 3MB cohorts Drew McIntyre & Jinder Mahal). At one point in the match, the referee ejects McIntyre & Mahal from ringside after they attempted to interfere. In the end, just Gabriel hits Slater with his signature maneuver “The 450 Splash” to get the victory and end the program.…

WWE Main Event 4-24-13: Mark Henry Conquers Everybody…Almost

The show began with Main Event commentator John “Bradshaw” Layfield interviewing Mark Henry about his recent attacks on Sheamus. Then, things began to turn a little hostile when JBL goaded Mark Henry into facing four guys in a Gauntlet Match. He was originally scheduled to face The Usos (Jimmy & Jey) in a 2-on-1 Handicap Match, but instead he ended up having Jimmy as his first opponent. After Henry disposed of Jimmy, his brother Jey was Henry’s next opponent. Henry disposed of him as well. Henry’s fourth opponent was Santino Marella. Despite a valiant effort, Santino could not put away Henry. Henry’s fourth and final opponent was The Great Khali. After back-and-forth action between the two giants, Khali knocks Henry out of the ring. Instead of returning to the ring, Henry decides to walk out on the match, thus giving Khali the win by count-out. I guess Henry realized that he was about to get beat.…

WWE Main Event 4-17-13: Wade Barrett Retains

The show began with a Battle Royal to determine the #1 contender to Wade Barrett’s Intercontinental Championship. The winner would then immediately go on to face Barrett for the championship in the following match. The competitors in the Battle Royal consisted of The Great Khali (accompanied by Natalya & Hornswoggle), Justin Gabriel, The Usos, 3MB members Drew McIntyre & Jinder Mahal, Santino Marella, Primo & Epico (with Rosa Mendes in a neutral corner), Yoshi Tatsu, and Alex Riley. I’m surprised that R-truth wasn’t a competitor because he had beaten Barrett in a non-title match this past Monday on Raw. In the end, Justin Gabriel outlasted every other competitor, thus earning the championship opportunity. There is a lot of history between Barrett and Gabriel. For instance, they were both rookies during season 1 of NXT and they are both former members of the factions The Nexus and The Corre, so these two know each other quite well. As for the match, Barrett ended up defeating Gabriel and retaining his championship by first raking Gabriel’s eyes (unbeknownst to the ref) and then finishing him off with his finishing maneuver, the Bull Hammer Elbow. Since Barrett retained his championship, that means that he …

WWE Main Event 4-17-13: 10 Men, 1 #1 Contender

Tonight on Main Event, there will be a 10-Man Battle Royal to determine the #1 contender to Wade Barrett’s Intercontinental Championship. The winner will face Barrett for the championship immediately following. This past Monday on Raw, R-Truth beat Barrett in a non-title match, so I’d be surprised if he wasn’t 1 of the 10 men competing tonight. Tune in at 8/7 ct on ION Television.…
